Why I Didn’t Like Colleen Decker
Susie says…
You may well recognise the name Colleen Decker…Colleen was the daughter of Annalise Decker. We met her for the first time in You Don’t Know Me, a Deep Have book. She was dating Tucker Newman.
Colleen was a little spoiled, sneaky, smart-alecky and generally nothing but trouble.
She was a character I created that I didn’t like! I thought Colleen was very selfish. She didn’t see Tucker for who he was, and how much he needed a home, a family and a girlfriend who loved him for who he was. She was sneaky and bratty to her mother, and generally not fun to be around. But…Andrea did a great job of growing her up, and today, she’s turned out to be fine woman, who I really love. So kudos to Andrea for redeeming her! I’m thrilled she’s here to share more of Colleen’s story…
Why I Had to Redeem Colleen Decker
Andrea says…
Soooo…. We next meet Colleen eight years after her adventures in You Don’t Know Me. She’s now a nurse and works in Minneapolis, MN at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
Colleen has grown up quite a bit since she was the volleyball queen in Deep Haven. She’s taken that sassy, stubborn attitude and softened it into spunk and tenacity. In fact, she’s grown up quite a bit from her Deep Haven days.
I loved telling Colleen’s story because I think each of us have things from high school we’ve grown past. We each have a chance to redeem our old selves and, through God’s help, remake them into something beautiful.
One of the things Colleen has let go along the way is her high school boyfriend, Tucker. Luckily, Tucker has his own story so we don’t have to say good bye to him. You can find Tucker’s story in Light My Fire, the first book in Susie May’s Summer of the Burning Sky series. In Hangin’ by a Moment, Colleen meets the handsome but mysterious Jack Stewart. It turns out Jack is a former pararescue jumper who is hiding out in Deep Haven, but he might just be willing to train her to be a flight nurse for Deep Haven’s newly developed Crisis Response Team. You’ll have to read for yourself if they are able to overcome their differences and work together as a team.
I have to admit, it was nerve wracking to take a character Susie May had already developed and make her my own—especially since she was a character Susie didn’t like! Could I mature her into someone who is a great heroine? Could I redeem her negative qualities? Once I got into the rhythm of the story, however, and with a ton of encouragement from Susie, Colleen blossomed into the woman she was meant to be all along.
