The 10 Romantic Suspense Novels that Inspired Me

When I started planning my new Dive Team Investigations series, I spent an entire summer reading as much romantic suspense as I could get my hands on. Whenever possible, I read each series in its entirety but I really studied the first books in the series to see how some of my favorite authors introduced the cast of characters we were going to be hanging out with for three, four, or five books.
It was a hard job! LOL!
So how did I choose which books to read? I did four things…
I looked up which authors had recently won awards like the Christy, the Carol, and the Selah, which authors wrote for the publishers I was planning to target, which books were available in my local library and which books I already owned.
In the end, I read or re-read books from these ten amazing romantic suspense authors. At a minimum, I read the first book in the series. Usually I read however much of the series was available at the time.
Lynette Eason – The Hidden Identity Series and the Elite Guardians series
Dani Pettrey – The Alaskan Courage Series and the Chesapeake Valor series
Irene Hannon – The Private Justice series
Lisa Harris – The Southern Crimes series
Patricia Bradley – The Logan Point series
DiAnn Mills – The FBI Houston series
Terri Blackstock – If I Run from the If I Run Series and I revisited the Cape Refuge series
Susan May Warren – The Montana Fire series
Ronie Kendig – The Quiet Professionals series
Dee Henderson – The O’Malley’s were my first introduction to romantic suspense. No list of books that have shaped my writing would be complete without them!
All of these authors bring their own unique spin to the genre I love. Some are more focused on the military, some on relationships, some on adventure, some on law enforcement.
All of them are amazing and I’m thrilled to be following in their footsteps with Beneath the Surface and the Dive Team Investigations series.
